Follow the Drinking Gourd transported its audience through music of Scott Joplin, the elegance of Duke Ellington and the glorious likeness of Marian Anderson at Lawnside School on Feb. 12.
The program featured the group named for the song that guided fugitives to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Bass Ivan Woods, Soprano Julie-Ann Whitely and pianist Diane Goldsmith performed and taught the people ranging in age from pre-schoolers to over 80 years old. Ms. Whitely is a member of the Opera Company of Philadelphia while Mr. Woods performs with the Philadelphia Singers, the resident chorus of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ms. Goldsmith has performed widely as a soloist. The Lawnside celebration had youngsters doing a syncopated waltz and answering questions about famous musicians and music styles.
The Society held a brief Lawnside History Quiz, too. Here are some of the questions: When was Lawnside incorporated as a borough? What is the motto of Lawnside School? When was the Lawnside Fire Company organized?
The performance ended with a riveting duet from "Porgy and Bess." Follow the Drinking Gourd is available for appearance.
